There's a 601 on eBay now and, as a heads-up, I'm bidding on it. My intent is to purchase it and refurbish it so it can be used and then sell it to any interested member of the community for whatever it costs me to do so. Naturally, the less it goes for, the cheaper I'll re-sell it for. Wish me luck. Good luck, Chad. It's a beauty. - - The seller obviously googled some info on it and found a thread probably from BBC ... I hope you win it. I'm still kinda stunned by how much the last 601 went for on eBay ... $311.99

Yeah, that price is far too high. I'm hoping that nobody bids on it except me so that it can stay in the Blues Brothers community. I'd love to buy every 601 and 608 that comes up, but it makes no sense to do so if the price is that high. After all, this isn't about the money.
I'm actually hoping to find a reasonably-priced model that's similar to the 601 and 608 internally to test a theory I have about converting them to have a concealed headphone jack that's activated by one of the 8-Track buttons, yet still allows the use of the radio.
If that idea pans out, the 8-track function will be sacrificed for a line-in feature and I'll post a detailed how-to. First things first, though, I need a test unit...

That didn't take too long. It's already out of my price range at this point, so now I'm going to sit back and watch the crazy set in. I guarantee that whoever buys it will wind up paying more than I'm asking for my 608.

The damn thing was only 4.99 a day ago.... Rob I know. At $76.00 today, plus $15.50 shipping, that brings it to my door for $91.50. If the tape retaining clip is broken, then there's the cost of whatever a parts player goes for, with shipping, added to it. Best-case, if it only needed the wires, I'd be out an inconsequential amount for wires and cleaning supplies and my time; neither of which I charge for to board members. An additional $58.50 and it would be tied with my 608; which has a refreshed face and needle, cleaned internals, secondary wiring to preserve the factory harness, and a flawless radio. Crazy; crazy, I tell you!

And, once again, the price on the stupid 8-track player is way up in the stratosphere. $308.03 for that unit. I don't know what to say...
I'm proud to offer the best bargan in Bluesmobile 8-Tracks in the world; with an asking price of less than half normal retail.
Only one unit left; a beautiful 608, first $150.00 buys it.

I'm not even going to bother bidding on that one. If those fools want to waste their money, what can I do? That eBay unit will need a LOT of work; I'd do it, but I'm not shelling out the investment to get the player.

I'm going to go ahead and bid on this one. If I can get it for a decent price (the way these things are going I figure 150 including shipping) then I'll be content. LV, if you're interested, and I do get it, I'll ship this and my 681 to you. If you can get the 601 working, great! If not, at least I'll have a screen accurate radio...

Good luck with that. I'd be glad to work on it for you and, if I can't get it working between that and the 681, at least all you'll be out is shipping. I'd like to remind you, and anyone else, that the 608 is also considered to be screen-accurate since there's nothing visible in any of the shots that makes distinguishing between the two possible. So, for those who don't want to pay more than $150 +shipping, I have a screen-accurate 8-track unit for sale. Though, at this point, I'm tempted to use it in my '73 El Camino. Case-in-point, here's a shot of the front of my personal-use Craig S608 for my car and the S601 beneath it.

Here are the internals on the 608 I have for sale to show people exactly what they can expect of my work:

And here's the 601 I reworked that's currently in Arthur's possession. From a mechanical and functional standpoint, the 608 is superior to the 601 due to improved circuitry and the function of the LOC/DX/RPT being replaced with the DX/MUTE function on the 608; or, for those of you who don't tear apart 8-track players for fun, the fact that if you have the button pushed on the 601, as you have to in order to hear local stations, then the 8-track will default to playing the same track in a continuous loop. With the 608, the function of the button is an unused mute feature. The fact that I want to actually wire up the stereo to use to play 8-tracks in my own car led me to choose the more user-friendly 608.

I knew I should have put in a higher starting bid. I missed my bid increment by a half a second after the auction ended... Oh well. LV, PM sent.

That's a pretty big issue, too. The track piece can get corroded and stuck. Best-case, if that does happen, it repeats one track continuously. Worst case, it destroys every cartridge put into it. I rather like the 632; though the 681 is one of my personal favorites in terms of practical functionality and neat features. As a bit of a heads-up; don't pay more than $50.00 INCLUDING SHIPPING for a unit like that.
I have mixed feelings about presently tearing up a 681 to fix a 608; but, as soon as my specialty tools arrive, I will be doing so. I'm also anticipating the arrival of a 630; which may mean that I can save the 681 until they have to give their lives to save a 601 or 608.
If you have any questions about an eBay player, feel free to ask me. I'm no expert; but my advice and 5 nickels gets you change for a quarter.
It's astounding how many variants Craig made with these players.
