If you have ever researched the history of Maxwell St.
then you are well aware that UIC and City Hall have slowly and are continuously strong arming the market into oblivion.
* I find it hilarious that the same institutions that have basically destroyed Maxwell Street, in a bogus claim "to honor the market that once was", saved a few of the building facades
(just the facades, not the buildings themselves) and erected those
bronze statues along the sidewalk.
Basically saying... "We'll happily destroy a 150 year old community
and it's traditions, but look... we put up a few statues!"
(to honor what we destroyed in the first place)
If you feel so inclined, take the City of Chicago survey that asks how
"The New Maxwell Street Market" can be improved:
www.surveymonkey.com/s/9ZSLY3S
The biggest complaints are:
- No longer on Maxwell street (obviously)
- The need for musicians to now fill out application forms for assigned spots (that are not even guaranteed even if you do fill out the forms)
- The newly increased vendor fees
(which didn't even exist before the market was forced to move... twice)
- No longer allowing vendors to park near their booths
(as well as towing their vehicles away)
- The elimination of free parking on Sundays.
- That it is now controlled by the "Chicago Department of Special Events", rather than an independent, non-profit community organization.
(The CDSE seems to want to treat the market as a tourist event
like "Taste of Chicago", or some sort of organized rock concert)
They are now finally wondering why the vendors and customers are disappearing.
* You can find info on the history of Maxwell Street all over the net.
If you want to know a little bit about "The New Maxwell Market", the city website has a page on it here:
explorechicago.org/city/en/things_see_do/event_landing/special_events/mose/maxwell_street_market.html
** The survey's first question is...
"How long have you attended the market" and allows you to type whatever you want. ( in other words, it's not a drop-down multiple choice question).
If you haven't ever been there I would suggest something like...
"I would be interested in visiting, If I knew that it would match the
flavor/ feel of what it once was".
*** The survey is anonymous and doesn't ask for any information from the person completing it.
