I am assuming that my heater core is leaking because the heater hoses were bypassed and connected together when I got the car. The hvac box is currently in the car, and the dash is partially disassembled. How much is involved to remove the hvac box to replace the heater core? Do I need to remove the entire dashboard to remove the hvac box or can the box be removed without all of that work? Thanks Tony

I did this job in the last year or two. I'm pretty sure you'll need to remove the whole box. You have to disconnect the A/C too so if it's working at all doing this kind of sucks.
I'm pretty sure the box will slide out if you can get the big lower metal cover of the dash off, I forget what all you need to take off to get that far.
After that there are a handful or nuts on the firewall on pointy looking studs some of them are in kind of annoying spots but you can get them all with a wrench. There might be a couple more inside holding the box but mine were all gone. Some vacuum lines and the control cable are routed along the top box and connected to the vacuum motors and door. The A/C evaporator and heater core are bolted together inside the box so you really need to disassemble the whole thing.
