My 76 Civilian 400 Monaco came with flat black rubber a-arm shields: But my 74 Cop fury came with silverized shields: I was talking with 74FP about them, and he explained that the silverized coating was used on the bigger motors, to protect against the greater heat from the exhaust manifolds. He didn't know if it was just 440s, or 400/440s, or high performance cop 440's only. I checked the parts catalog, and I'll be darned if I can figure out the mapping. My 76 was a 400 and didn't have silver, so I think it must have been 440 only. Anybody have any pics of a civilian 440 a-arm shield? If it turns out that this is a "any 440 thing", I'll move the thread to the regular details subforum. your friend in new details, arthur

Interesting, I never knew there was a difference. Which leads me to the next question. We're the exhaust manifolds the same on the 400 and 440? From what I can tell they were.

Mine has the rubber/silver on the right side , but the left is black and kinda like tar paper instead of rubber . Maybe it was replaced at some point . But if it was replaced it was done prior to 1981 as this car sat parked and forgotten till 2002 . Attachments:

I'll move this thread to the regular Monaco subforum (not police specific). Mine has the rubber/silver on the right side , but the left is black and kinda like tar paper instead of rubber . Maybe it was replaced at some point . Hi 177: I think it's stunningly more likely that your civilian 440 came with silverized rubber on both sides, and the left shield has since been replaced, as compared to only cop 440's came with silverized shields, and somehow your car had both shields replaced, one with some type of tar paper, and the other with a cop silverized rubber. So you broke the code, thanks! /arthur

The rubber is called masicated rubber. I replaced mine with NOS ones from an Imperial. You can buy a roll if you can't find cut ones already. All formals 74-78 are the same. I bought adhesive heating shielding from Summit and used addition spray adhesive to attached it to the rubber. Worked like a charm. I did buy new installation clips as some were missing. The first years when cat's came out some cars would literally melt from the heat. They made several improvements to control it which accounts for both sides. It was the same for the battery shields it kept them from boiling out. Police cars sat idling for hours, it wasn't uncommon then to have one burn up after it set the gass on fire.

My '75 Gran Fury (Mendocino County) has black on the left and the silver on the right, it's a 440 Police and it had cats (and a ton of other California emissions) and nothing like that has been touched since 1978 when the car was retired. Adam
