So very sad to see you're having to give up your dream car again... It sounds to me like those guys have some kind of vendetta against you, and I'd suggest its borderline harassment.
I'm no stranger to meeting these Barney Fife officers with the Ecto (blue lights are a no-no) but most cases the worst I received was a lecture, and usually ending with a wink. It seems to me that perhaps some Blues Brother peed in their cereal, and are taking it out on you.
I personally would pursue some kind of recourse (at least the impound/towing fees) because it seemed a bit excessive. I know laws vary from state to state, but if the rules apply to you, then they should also apply, to say, Geek Squad, restored police cars, heck even the whackers. Unless they plan to enforce it 100% then it seems like they're targeting you (to make an example, perhaps on your block?)...
Even if you do not go the legal route, I would definitely write your local news station about it (My local NBC channel features an "On Your Side" segment, that big changes have come about from). It seems if your town is small enough to have the time to hassle you about your BluMo, then perhaps a story of a prop car builder being hassled by the man, would sell big.
I remember in your build thread you said your neighbors were not happy with you making the car in the first place = not to sound paranoid, but perhaps they're in on it?
In any case, I cannot stress my sadness for your loss - because it was a glorious ride and I know how much you loved it. I can, however, stress my outrage at your local police and all I can hope for is some change for you.
PS, Push Bars illegal on civvie cars? WHAT?! Last time I checked, these are options on many trucks, jeeps, and even some cars... I think these guys are making stuff up.

"It's 362 miles to Chicago, we packed our shit, the cops are at the end of the street, It's dark and we're wearing sunglasses"
John it's probably illegal to wear sunglasses at night there .

Good point I'm sure it is. I agree w/ Dent, The neighbors dont like it, that didnt help in some way. My thought was about the same w/ the police when I google earthed the town of Santa Claus, it's a very strict theme there isnt it? All the streets named as such. I could just see them thinking your defiling the towns theme. Makes more sense to me than the cops really giving a shit about your car, like he said "your car is the issue here" Too bad it has to be that way. john

John it's probably illegal to wear sunglasses at night there . I still can't get a straight answer about that here in MD. Guess I'll keep driving until I find out. (Yeah; like that'd stop me.....)

STEAM THAT IS A RIOT!!! I fell out of my chair. I needed a good laugh man. To everyone else, thanks again guys. You're right about this screwed up little utopia. Our lease is up Oct. 1st. We have 70% of everything boxed up and ready to roll. Looks like maybe NC. I plan on using the scratch from the sale of the Bluesmobile to move us the hell out of here before I am beheaded as a Tyrant.

SCMODS - tell us when you move. I'm going to send the Santa Claus PD an email. Already drafted, it's a little salty, so I won't send it until you're gone.

THANKS AZ!! I'll let you know when we are taillights away from Santa Claus lol. Elwood, I WILL ABSOLUTELY build another car. Crazy story yesterday. I was at the barber shop when a guy sitting there asked me about the Bluesmobile and why I wasn't driving it. After a lengthy explanation he laughed and said "I know where there is another one just like it sitting under a shed nearby". He gave me an address and I went to see the car. It is a 1974 POLICE package Monaco in black and white. It is ROUGH but as far as I can tell complete. 150 speedo, spot and tow hitch. I couldn't get the doors open and the owner wasn't home. Actually, the property looks vacant. I will have to dig deeper and see just what is going on with that car. I will post pics as soon as I get back over there. Man... you don't know how bad I want to pull the plug on this ebay auction and keep my F---ing car. Argh.

Maybe it will end up being your new bluesmobile. Sounds exciting!

Hoe hoe hoe(s)... buncha pricks...
Plan:
- Trade current car for a wad of cash. - Get package car - hell, what'ya say... is it the new Bluesmobile or WHAT!??! - Rough and dirty as it is, make her a trailer queen - Let it sit like this in your driveway for at least one night - With this setup, wearing full BB outfit, proudly haul yourself outta grinch town. - Pass those Boyz II Men At The End Of The Road ever so S L O W L Y - Should they pull you over kindly tell them, now that you found another "40 year old car, even closer to the movie-Bluesmobile, ya know, from the 1979 movie", you instantly got a job supporting a band "doing a Blues Brothers tribute tour through Europe and the subcontinents". - Thank them kindly for their service, you "felt much safer the last couple of days with them watching over your new movie car replica and the old one before, the one you sold on ebay for almost 10 Grand..." Praise the good timing of all the events and how the lord works in mysterious ways. - The same day, from another town down the road mail off a christmas package with at least 10 Bluesbrothers DVDs and a thank you note. Put your old address as sender.

Man, I'm just catching up on all of this... CRAP! That ain't right, sounds like one or two cops got it in their minds to enforce a rare ordinance here for whatever reason. Common sense says a 35-year-old beat to death (appearing!) cruiser ain't gonna be mistaken for an active patrol. We had some issues with our Bluesmobile in the 80s, the car was fairly shiny looking still, and heck, was only about 8 years old when we had her! Quite often we were pulled over and inspected up and down but always let go (well, with the occasional moving violation perhaps). But just as often the cops LOVED the car even back then.
Happily I've never been given any grief and have had quite a few positive reactions from either of our newer Bluesmobiles over the past 5 years. I agree it's a shame you couldn't just settle elsewhere, I'd hope not too many places would have this much concern... I hurt with ya, SCMODS.

I ran into this once with some dumbass cop who gave me the same lip.... His main complaint was the word "POLICE" on the back left rear trunk area. Other than that, there is nothing about the car that makes it a "Police" car. The number one thing to remember is that you can not argue with a cop. If he had any sense he would not have stopped you in the first place. The key is being "cool" with him and knowing their language. Usually the people driving old police cars now a days are gang-bangers and shit, at least that is the trend here in the south. If you are cool with them they usually get over it.
Here is the best solution I have come up with for this. Have a black piece of black magnetic vinyl cut and slap it over the "POLICE" section when driving and peel it off when showing it.
