The '74 NYSP parts car I picked up had a very rotted dual snorkel air cleaner and I noticed a lot of the police cars for sale recently had them too. The NYSP car didn't have the lid and I've seen a couple different decals...
This "small" one on a '73 (C-body)...
Same small one from "maybe" a '74...
This "big" one on a '76 (B-body)...
Assuming they're original, when was the switch over? Which would be "correct" on a real '74?
Thanks as always guys.

Good question. I have always wondered the same thing.

- We have a lot of examples here that do not match what's posted above. Some look original but who really knows. 1977 B-body Monaco should be small decal. 1974 Monaco should be big decal. 1976 Coronet should be small decal. 1973 Polara should be big decal. 1973 Polara should be big decal. 1975 Gran Fury should be small decal. 1973 Polara should be big decal. 1973 Polara should be big decal. 1972 Fury should be big decal. Of course there's a bunch that match what I posted above but for the ones I looked at there sure seems to be a lot that don't. A lot of the single snorkel breathers seemed to have the small decal. A lot of the 1973 Polara's seemed to have the small decal, single snorkel or small angle dual snorkel. Anyway lol, we never really know with Ol' Ma Mopar, she apparently drank a lot. I think for Blumo's it should be the big decal. Other than that ...

Here's the answer, my '75 Gran Fury 440 all original as found had no decal and I've seen others from the mid 70's with no decal.

The big one does seem to have the more late 60's early 70's braggadocious look to it, but the small one looks more like something they'd slap on a cop car. I bet the Bluesmobile would've had the small one, but I have the big one and I think it looks right at home so I'd say it's down to personal preference.

Soooo, we have confirmed NOTHING! Lol, there doesn't seem to be any method to the madness. the small one looks more like something they'd slap on a cop car. Could be. I noticed a couple of restorations we have posted here and I gotta think they would have done some research into this. But then again ... maybe not. This beauty '74 was the one for sale in Florida back in 2012. It seemed like they went all out to be accurate with the car and they went with the big decal. - bluesmobiles.proboards.com/thread/1361/sold-1974-monaco-chp-floridaAnd this Kansas Highway Patrol is actually a 1975 (they changed the grille to a '74) and they also went with the big decal. - bluesmobiles.proboards.com/thread/779/sold-1975-monaco-california-massachusettsI dunno, it's enough to drive ya crazy I tells ya.

Thanks for the input guys. Goodness, Chrysler in the 70s was confusing. Likely they were using what ever was (or wasn't) just lying around. I have to agree with flcl64, the "big" one has a more late 60s/early 70s feel to it, so I ordered one up as well as a can of hemi orange engine paint. It might not be correct but it will look cool.
It was admittely difficult to take an angle grinder to my rotted air cleaner, but I'm gonna try to make one good one out of it and the single-snorkel I have off a motorhome 440.

Could it be that the round, long+short snorkels got the big stickers and the square, short snorkels got the small stickers? Though these both look original... ..Maybe someone got the lids mixed up at some point? (I came back and edited this cause I saw Steam's post directly contradicted my theory completely, so now these two pics further prove maybe they just put what they had on... Did they put 2 barrel carbs on 440s? Maybe only 4 barrels got the big stickers saying so? Spitballing now.)

My 100% original '73 Road Runner had a 400 with the big decal, my '78 North Carolina State Police Fury had the large decal for that year (I don't remember exactly what it looked like, I'll have to dig out some pictures), my '75 Gran Fury which we all know is all original has no decal. Chrysler was always fairly inconsistent between model runs, plants, years, ect. I would think they'd be more concerned that a Road Runner or Charger got the big impressive decal where as the guy at the police garage could care less, put whatever you have at the time or none at all if you ran out at your station on the assembly line.
