Hey guys,
Was wondering.. Anyone remove their leaf springs before? In reading the FSM, it says to use a special tool to compress the springs, to safely remove them. Seems that even though the wheels may be off the ground, they are still under pressure..
Is this tool an absolute must do, or has anyone removed them without it??

Hi Country: It looks like the special tool is not needed. Here: www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/forum/topic/9145-sold-1974-dodge-monaco-sedan-maryland/page-2#entry117595I asked Bluzman about the safety bulletin that describes replacing rear springs: > The rear springs on all 1974 "C" body Dodge model vehicles are of a new > design...changes cause the springs to remain under load during removal or installation. > ... > Attempting to remove or install rear springs on the 1974 "C" body without the use of the > special service tool is not recommended. and he responded: I have removed several rears complete with the leaf springs and did not need any special tools. As a matter of fact, took the rear out of the 76 Police car tonight. Remove the rear bolts first (4 each side). Car is supported by jack stands, with a floor jack under the center pumpkin. After the rear bolts are out, remove the front ones, (4 nuts per side). The whole assembly will slide right out with the tires removed, dont forget the shocks, rear brake hose and e-brake cables. your friend in not needing special tools, arthur

Thanks Arthur!!
What a pain in the ass!!! Ive spent literally the whole day on the 4 bolts holding the back of the springs on. So far, I've had to drill out 3 bolts, as the nut on the backside broke from the weld. Uhg! Got one more to go.
Does seem pretty easy though once those are outa the way. The springs just inch forward once the tension is released.
