Art...did we ever figure out to set global notifications for thread posts here on the site?
You know...one where a person could get an email that new posts have been made, or a default "automatically notify" option?

Hi Rob: From what I can gather, 1) There is a way to get e-mail notification when an update is made to a thread you have bookmarked 2) There is not a way to get e-mail notification when a new thread has been created ----------------- You can add a topic to your bookmarks by clicking on the button within the topic, or by selecting the tick box on the reply page. You can view your list of bookmarked topics via the View Bookmarks option on your profile page [Profile >> view bookmarks]. By default, you will not receive notification of replies to your bookmarks, however, you can change this. You can opt to receive notification of replies by PM, email, or have no notification at all. This option can be changed via the manage bookmarks link which is on the bookmarks page. You can also delete your bookmarks from this page. salinelinux.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=website&action=print&thread=125and: > A user asked a question about e-mail notification. He asked if any of our > forums are, or could be, structured so that a user can request e-mail > notification if anything is added to the forum. ... > Yes, but, only for threads bookmarked. support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=support&action=display&thread=416380

Thanks, Art...that's what I thought. I work with a few types of software on other forums, and some offer the option for 'instant notification' whenever a new reply is made to a 'watched' board section, not just individual bookmarked topics or replies to threads one has posted in previously. Oh well...we can't have everything, and this board is perfect otherwise! ;D Rob

Hi Rob:
I'm concerned about the lack of a backup function, but it sounds that there are plans for it in the next release. It's not an important function, unless its needed.
The lack of new-topic notification feature is a bummer. For my personal use, my needs are mostly met by the "new topics" page, but even that has limitations because it only lists the most recent 1-page of updates.
I think there are a few little nits, like not being able to remove a poll from a thread, but overall I think the board features cover our needs.
Here's to high hopes that the next release gives us the few extra features we've been thinking of, arthur

The one thing that I find incredibly helpful is that whenever there is anything new, in any of the forums, the little dot next to the folder image will be blue (as opposed to grey), and once you go into the forum there's a "new" icon next to the topic with new posts. That's my easy way of finding new material from the last time I visited the site...

Re backups, just download everything from the server once in a while, assuming you are having some kind of ftp access? It's better than nothing should a worst case strike and still better than a not-yet existing backaup-feature. Seen it happen before, all gone. Just gone...

Yes, it's a little scary. 440, I don't think any of us mods or admin have any type of FTP access. Mods can move/edit posts. Admin can delete posts and create subforums. And that's about it. We have no ability to create backups. So half of me says we should get to work on starting a new board that has backup ability (and lose what we have now unless we manually transfer it over). And the other half says to just wait, hope we don't get anything deleted until we get backup capability, and then backup everything (including what we have now). your friend in protecting the board info, arthur

I used this tool in the past with great success: www.httrack.com/page/2/It downloads it ALL (including pics from photobucket for example), just everything. Make sure you have quite a bit of free space on your hd, I was always surprised about the amount of data. What you get is a folder, with everything in it, just double-click the index.html to open it in your browser and browse away (at very high speed, since it's all from the hd now). Used it to download boards to read on planes. Best part: It's free. There are other tools like this out there, just search for "download websites tool" . But this was the first one that worked for me. On another board about a certain video camera a zipped file was passed around that contained the whole old board of the manufacturer who sold his biz and became a priest... oh sorry wrong line, he sold it and took all his website offline.

Back to topic it took me a while to figure out the notification thing. For quite some time I was unable to find the page with the settings so I would receive email upon new anserws to bookmarked threads.
Maybe it is burried here in this thread but for future reference I'd like to add the path here:
click on "profile" -> "bookmarks" -> "manage bookmarks" I simply did not see the "manage bookmarks" or I probably did not think it was clickable.
Interestingly, if my minced meat brain serves me right, I did receive emails back when the board started? And I cannot remember ever having to make any settings? Or am I just mixing it up with BBC?

weird, this was / is not there for me but I did have one bookmark for an old thread when I started looking...
Could you please add 1 bookmark and check if this pulldown line "click here to manage your bookmarks preferences" is still there?

Thank you for testing this. I was about to post my own screenshot marking the difference. I made it so here it is anyway: So it seems once you have at least one bookmark, the unmistakable "click here to manage your bookmarks preferences" gets replaced by the other "manage bookmarks" in the top right corner, which is only underlined if your mouse is over it (mouse invisible in screenshots). I probably saw it but it didn't trigger me to click it, I thought it was just the heading of the page I'm already on.
