Thanks for the update, Spanks! ;D Yeah, I've seen that vid before...that dude drives the hell outta his Blumo, but it sounds sweeeet. Speaking on sounds, IMHO, I would forgo the headers to keep the original sound of the 440...it might be Ok for muscle cars (like that Charger), but I dig the sound of the stock 440 exhaust (although I would opt for some nice, throaty mufflers). The 3:23 will give you better standard cruise economy (especially with today's gas prices), and the big block has enough torque to get you real gone fast. Don't worry about getting her done quick; I haven't had time for the last year and a half to work on mine, with other $$$ projects going all the time....I'm hoping to turn some wrenches on mine sometime this fall (it's hot down here in Florida). ;D Rob

I am also starting to rethink the use of headers. I really want to keep the sound of the car true to the movie, headers may ruin that. I'd think that the muffler would have more to do with the sound of the exhaust than headers. I really don't have much experience here. I see some things like this: > When I fitted the JR header, I found it no louder at all... possibly > marginally quieter? > > It does change the tone to a lower more burbly sound.... forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index.php/t-168188.htmlMaybe "more burbly sound" would fit with what Ghostbluesman recommended with "throaty mufflers". > I would forgo the headers to keep the original sound of the > 440...it might be Ok for muscle cars (like that Charger), but I dig > the sound of the stock 440 exhaust (although I would opt for > some nice, throaty mufflers). The cop 440's had different mufflers than civilian cars, so who knows what sound we're hearing in the movie. The movie has acceleration sounds when the car is actually skidding to a stop (prior to the bridge jump). You could use (2) 2925797 mufflers, which are listed in the parts catalog as belonging to a 1974 Monaco with dual exhaust with a HP 400. www.bluesmobiles.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=details&thread=258&post=1413My plan is to re-use the cop 440 mufflers from the Fury on the Monaco. And run big headers and tubing back to those stock mufflers, but with an electric exhaust cutout prior to the mufflers. I figured that would be the best way to have stock-like sound most of the time, but have no restriction for WOT pulls. I'll be keeping an eye on how you proceed so I can adjust my plan if necessary. your friend in sharing the adventure of blazing a new path, arthur

I'm going to use Flowmasters, only because I've got a couple of new ones lying around I never used on my wagon. Rob

I am not set on manifolds vs headers, either way. It will probably come down to what ever I an get a deal on. I'm certainly not going to spend $400 on HP manifolds when I can get headers for $500. In my experience, headers do have a "tin'ier" sound, and they can have fitment, heat and rust issues. Manifolds basically last forever. Either way I will be using a big stock type muffler, obviously duals with some sort of x or H pipe depending on logistics.

Either way I will be using a big stock type muffler... Can you elaborate on what you mean by "stock type"? Does that mean a Mopar part number, or something that you could go get as replacement at Midas, or even something like a flowmaster. It looks like their 70 series is their quietest model:

Increased volume and added sound reduction?

Increased volume and added sound reduction? It sounded weird to me too, but I think they are saying: 1) Bigger volume means less sound, because there is more room in the muffler to bounce the sound waves off each other. 2) This has increased volume 3) which means less sound 4) and less sound is the same as "added sound reduction"

Something like this www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=superturboI used a Dynomax 17449 on my Buick Roadmaster wagon and got a rather significant improvement in performance with litterally no increase in sound at idle or cruise speeds. It opens up a bit at WOT but not much, I also added an x pipe at the same time so that may have had an effect as well.

About time for some updated pics. I have been crazy busy for the last couple months both with personal projects and customer projects. I just completed a transmission swap in a 67 Chevelle that turned out super sweet. Took out the old powerglide 2 speed and installed a 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrives. Wow what a difference that made! Bowtie overdrives was great to work with and have a nice product. Any way on to the Monaco. As I said in my last post the body shell is about done and looking good. ] Started stealing parts off of the North Carolina car. I finished welding up the half a$$ welds on the sub frame. If you recall we had some discussion about adding the "cop car" reinforcments. After debating it for a while and trying to decide if they actually did any good I decided to add two gussets right at the top of the crossmember, based on the cracking that Arthur uncovered on the Marin County sub frame. Now the sub frame and some of the suspension parts are painted. This week I hope to begin putting the front suspension together. Also completed from the list, is a complete set of custom Delrin body mount bushings, and I got the transmission back from the trans shop ready to go. I might add that the 727 rebuild is the first and only thing on this project, so far, to come in under budget!! More to come.

It's definitely been time for some updates. That's a nice gusset. Very uber coplike. But can we still say "Marin County", and Jenny needs to come up with a new name, or do we both need new names (like MC1 and MC2)?

Thanks, the gusset was fairly easy to make and seemed like it could actually do some good. As for the other angle iron gussets on the frame rails we have seen on cop cars, I could not make a case, in my own mind, of why I would need them or what benefit they provide. Not to mention I did not want to create conflicts with other bolt on components. Good point. MC1 and MC2 works. I guess it depends on what Jenny decides to name her project once she gets her hands on it. Marin County is in the title of your build thread. I am excited to start unwrapping all of these parts I have been collecting and start bolting stuff together.

Looking good there spanks! Great idea on the gussets! Arthur, your the original Marin County! So yes! I believe you can still refer to your car as "Marin County" we all think about your car, when we read that anyways! MC2 works for me!

Thanks Jenny. It has been like Christmas around here, unwraping and unboxing all kinds of cool suspension parts. I am not ready to unveil the completed subframe, it will be ready soon. Until then here are some teaser pics. If you remember all this suspension stuff looked like this a few months ago. Now this. Here is a shot comparing the new Firm Feel torsion bars (co what was going to be on Arthurs car) to the civi stockers. Fresh trans ready to go. Finally, I thought this was cool. This was my version of the "fall apart car". This was the white car after a marathon ride from Michigan to Cincinnati. After dragging two different Monacos up and down I75, over 700 miles total, with no issues I knew I was on borrowed time. These are the two tires that came off the back of the car! They looked boarderline OK when we took them off the car and stacked them in the corner, but then they just errupted! Good thing they waited until we got home!
