Folks, I know that this subject has been covered thousends of times, but I'd like to try and give my educated opinion on the matter, based on what I read or on what I can tell about things generally ho with transpo in the movies. Hopefully we can try together to bust some miths and verify other ones.
First of all, as some of you said, the cars breakdown we all saw was not the last official one -it is dated Aug '79 - and It is missing the Fall Apart car.
I honestly don't see the reason for the need of 6 Hero/beauty/closeup cars and just 2 stunt and 3 jump cars with allof the action they were going to be ready for. They probably had to make some radical changes on the memorandum.
We have also to consider locations. Multiple locations may need multiple vehicles, that would explain the need for 6 Principal Blumos and 6 Pintos. Speaking of locations, could rephrase the old "what happends in Vegas stays in Vegas" with "what's been destroyed in Chicago stays in Chicago": there is no reason ($) to take a wrecked car destroyed in a location and paying to have it transported to another location (miles and miles away) just to have it crushed in a junkyard -they have junkyards in Chicago too, they dedn't need to brig the wrecks in Cali just to have 'em crushed. I know for a fact the the Disney picture Herbie goes Bananas used multiple units with the same specs because they filmed in 4 different locations and each of them had to be used in a specific scene and in a specific location. At the end of the filming in Panama City one Hero car and one Blind driver-Herbie appears driving by himself when a stunt driver is hidden in the back seat actually driving it- were left to locals, it was to expensive to take them back to US. Plus the car that was set up to float across the Panama canal was parted out and crushed locally, it was just an old Bug shell with a boat engine.
This post is getting way too long, sorry, just to say that the 2 or 3 cars jumped in Chicago or others totalled there were most likely sent to a local scrap yard, matter of fact, they were blowing the budget pretty fast.
