Indeed, this car was 'rust free'. I think this is honestly just a lousy design that cause them to rust out here. It probably didn't help that my drain was stuff filled with mouse house. The firewall on the passenger side of my car is pretty solid so I should be able to just patch up the cowl without to much work. The driver side is going to be a bigger project since parts of the firewall are rusted I need to patch first but it's not to bad. The real trick will be the part around the wiper motor.
Anyway I'm working my way up to it with the passenger side first.

It looks like the cause was an old box fan if you can believe that. There is insurance, I'm not sure how it's all going to shake out yet.
I still have visions of how I might salvage things but I'm pretty sure I'm crazy. Finding the glass and other pieces I lost is looking to be tough without just getting another car and I really don't have the room. The roof is quite damaged/warped too, no idea what I would do there actually.
For now I'm worrying about the other car I had in the garage, paint and chrome is pretty fucked up looking. I recommend washing that shit off straight away if you can, don't wait for the insurance people like me. Apparently the soot is quite corrosive. Luckily most the trim on the monaco is aluminum or something.

Oh my God that sucks! I think that is a big fear of all car guys. Doing what we do to our cars and projects to make them nice, but working late at night, often tired(or buzzed), grinding and welding with sparks flying around 40 year old upholstery and carpet it is a very real possibility that something could catch fire long after you left the garage for the night. I have often thought about that after a welding repair and have gone back out to the garage just to be sure all was ok. I truly hope that everything works out for you. I hope insurance will do what you pay them for and help you replace your car.

Holy shit, this is awful! When did this happen? What are the details, if you care to share them? What about your other car?
I'm going to start a separate thread about insurance. This is an important reminder that we need to be prepared for the worst. Good news here is that it looks like no one was hurt....hopefully.

Man, that sucks, sorry for your loss. Holy shit, this is awful! When did this happen? What are the details, if you care to share them? What about your other car? I'm going to start a separate thread about insurance. This is an important reminder that we need to be prepared for the worst. Good news here is that it looks like no one was hurt....hopefully. Don't get me started on insurance, I run a dealer body shop and was an insurance adjuster for a while. One word when it comes to any old you that you plan on driving, HAGERTY!

- Tough pics, man. Gonna have to call it the Bionic Blumo now. Gentlemen, we can rebuild her. The heat warped the roof? It must have been raging for a minute or two? Jesus H.

The other car is relatively okay: I did my best to wash it and took it up to the body shop. They told me the paint is pretty bad and since it's so thin they can't do much with it. The guy gave me some tips to try rubbing it out by hand but I haven't really started on it yet. This all happened sometime Sunday night/morning. I didn't notice till about 1am when the breaker tripped, the house is on the same circuit (wtf?) Apparently the fire had been done for some time and all that was really left was the smoke. The monaco is definitely going to have to go into a salvage title to keep it. If I rebuild it it's a good excuse for getting it blasted I guess. I really need to get a better look at the roof. If I can find a rusted to shit donor for the interior and glass I could maybe still make this work but I dunno. For the most part the front clip is intact so I've got some options there too.

That is a strange sequence of events. It's hard to imagine how that the fire was intense enough to gut the Monaco without buring the whole roof off of your garage. That's crazy, and lucky too I guess. You would probably be best buying another car to get the parts you need but if by chance you could use it I have a body with a decent roof and a good back glass.

A roof skin is fairly easy to do, depending on the rest of the car's condition would make it worthwhile or not. A nose swap onto a '75-'77 Royal is easier, and usually they are fairly cheap, just a suggestion.
