hey guys, I checked in here a couple months ago when I picked up my car. Since then I've just been cruising around in it like a badass Now that the snow is coming though I've started working on it proper and thought I'd track progress/share photos and stuff here. I'm not sure what the best way to share photos yet is but my phone put together this handy alblum imgur.com/a/OpVgJSo far I've repacked the bearings (grease was super nasty) and redid some of the undercoating. Now i'm into the heater core, what a royal pita to get at, I'm sort of dreading putting the dash back together. Probably do that sometime this week though, procrastinating as I type this. Next up is probably a carb rebuild, the thing runs pig rich and I can see fuel leaking weeping out onto the intake some times. It's a carter 4bbl but I haven't been able to find a rebuild yet. Then I've got to free up some garage space for the body work, anyone want to buy a firebird? I plan to get the monaco mostly prepped to paint next spring. I might try my hand at reupholstering the benches too over the winter if I have time (probably tan but the rest of the interior is green). I'm wondering what people think about the hood ornament, on one hand it's bad-ass, but on the other I plan on going pretty close to screen accurate on the exterior removing the trim, etc.

Oh and I forgot to mention I flushed a metric shit ton for stop leak out and put in a heavy duty fan since it was overheating. It seem to just have been there for the heater core, who the fuck does that!? The shady ass seller had disconnected the temperature light too... for shame.

How does it sound with the dual exhaust?

(probably tan but the rest of the interior is green). SEM color coat is some amazing shit on interior panels, you could spray everything from your interior with it (a lot of R&Iing parts) and no more green.

I even sprayed my green headliner with SEM color coat(camel) and it turned out pretty good

It has glass packs on so it's friggin loud, when the 4bbl opens up it kicks down it actually sounds pretty good though. I have to say they did a nice job installing it. I have the timing set really conservatively right now though since I really can't hear the motor really most of the time which is sort of annoying. I'll probably weld in some mufflers.

That sounds pretty awesome, considering I already have the dash apart the extra work isn't that bad and I can shoot it all in the house over the winter. My seats and carpet are shot so I don't have to worry about those to much but the rest of the stuff is in good shape. thanks for the tip!
I got the air box all back together tonight, wee. I think I've removed three mouse houses from this car so far.

Found out my A/C heater vacuum control box leaks real bad and is why when I but the airbox back in nothing seemed to be working right. Part number is 4361140 in case anyone is looking for it in the future, I found one on ebay for a fair price.
I need the weatherstrip for the door window glass channel too. Part number is 2932230 but people want way to much $ for it. Still looking around for a decent source, probably see what the local dealer quotes me on monday so I can save on shipping atleast.

Spotlight is here! I think I got a good deal on it, $35 and it's really clean. Supposedly off a fire truck. Took it down to the car wash before starting the body work. This is the first time I've washed it and it actually cleaned up pretty good. I feel a bit bad about painting it, not bad enough to stop though Finally freed up the space in the garage to work. It's still tight but I should be able to manage. Here is the vaccuum switch I got. It's actually slightly different but it seems to work fine. I'll probably be the only person who sees it to ever notice the difference. There is always more rust then you see I was hoping to get away without metal work on this project, looks like that's out. I'm probably going to end up pulling the rear glass and welding in some new metal here. I don't have my welder anymore though so I need to figure something out. At first I thought this was a shitty repair job but I'm not so sure anymore. I think that the factory just did a shitty job with this joint. Anybody else have problems here? It looks bad but it feels solid. I might just hit it with the wire wheel and bondo back over this part if I don't break through. Other side seems a lot better Most of the annoying trim is off, should just be the easy stuff now. I think I'm going to pull the panels and paint them by themselves it'll make it easier to get the door jambs and everything. This is my first color change, my project timeline is already slipping

Looks like a very clean car! The seams on the c-pillar always seem to be halfass done, when there is a vinyl roof. I'd do just as you said, wire wheel it, and re bondo it. I got a little lucky with mine. I just sanded the original mud down a bit, and added new on top, as it was still in ok condition. But needed some filling.
Im interested in seeing how you attack the back glass corners. Thats an area I still need to do.

Yeah it's really pretty clean overall. The only real disaster is the firewall, I'll try to get some pictures, it's going to be a lot of work to piece together if I decide to fix it.

I want to go back to 1974 and hit the Chrysler plant manager over the head with a 2x4. So much unpainted steel, wtf!? Anyway time I updated this thread! Here is a good trick I learned from Ram Charger Central. Grab these little fuckers with your vise grips and twist them off. If you can keep it straight there is minimal if any grinding required. Attacking the first panel! Yeah! Chrysler y u no paint shit? It got freaking cold over the winter. I pulled the deck lid since it was to cold to paint and moved to the basement for some wet sanding to keep the dust down. I filled the trim holes with solder. I used a wet rag here on the front clip to keep the first of the two holes from melting again. Same thing on the doors I decided to tackle the rear doors next cause they are pretty light and were easy to move to the basement. This door was hit on something, I didn't bother trying to pull it at all since it wasn't very deep. Used a tad of filler where the trim studs were. Let the primer flow! I pulled the fenders last weekend to start on next but ran into a bit of a cluster fuck I knew bits of the firewall were bad but I wasn't expecting this. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do yet but obviously I can't put it back together like this. I guess I'll just start cutting the shit out. There are a couple studs I need to be careful about locating but for the most part I think it will be relatively forgiving.

Oh man. That cowl rust sucks! I want to start a thread called "Rust Free, my ass!" Whenever I see a car listed as "rust free" this is immediately what I think of. I don't know the history of your car but I thought it looked damn good before you started the conversion. I bet anything someone would list that on ebay or craigslist and describe it as "solid rust free car".
What do the floor pans look like? I would imagine with holes like that a fair amount of water had to be getting under the carpet.

That looks like "solid rust" (that's free), to me...it's all in where you put the comma. Rob
