about the blues brothers hero player, and I think it is a fair summary that all agree that it is either a Craig S601 or Craig S608.
From the movie shot, I can think of only one detail that might determine if it was an S601 or S608 - the little dot on the lower right of the housing:
But even with that, I just don't think we have enough detail to know for sure. I think it looks more like just a "dot" (s601) than a "dot plus dash" (s608), but I readily admit it's not definitive and it could be either.
For that $311 S601, it wasn't just that there was ONE buyer at $311. There were two buyers at $310.
your friend in being amazed at 8-track prices, arthur
Hi Steam: I checked the e-bay ad, and here's the bid history: Member Id: e***r $311.99 Nov-08-11 04:42:33 PST Member Id: 0***s $306.99 Nov-08-11 05:07:33 PST Member Id: o***n $196.00 Nov-08-11 05:07:31 PST Member Id: 0***s $115.99 Nov-03-11 02:58:29 PDT Member Id: s***d $ 75.00 Nov-03-11 04:12:33 PDT
I think this shows that 0***s bid up to $115.99, and he had the winning at $76.00 for a long time ($75 other bid plus $1 bid increment). And then at 04:42, e***r bid something at or above $311.99, and had the winning bid at $118.49 ($115.99 other bid plus $2.50 bid increment). Just before the end of the auction o***n bid $196, and e***r kept the winning bid at $198.50 ($196 other bid plus $2.50 bid increment). And then right after that 0***s bid $306.99, and e***r kept the winning bid at $311.99 ($306.99 plus $5.00 bid increment).
So I guess we can say that there were three buyers at $196.00, two buyers at $306.99, and one buyer at $311.99. I wonder at what price there would be no buyers.

Here's an S603 with speakers.
THIS AUCTION IS FOR A CRAIG S603 8-TRACK PLAYER IT IS IN ORIGINAL BOX AND COMPLETE, IT HAS THE FACEPLATE THE KNOBS AND HARDWARE, YOU WILL ALSO GET THE ORIGINAL MANUAL. PLUS A SET OF NEVER USED OR INSTALLED CRAIG V304 POWERPLAY TWIN FLUSH MOUNT SPEAKERS. THEY ARE IN ORIGINAL BOX WITH ORIGINAL MANUAL.
This one I will be bidding on, if the price stays reasonable, and offering up for sale here; cleaned, refreshed, and tested. For anyone interested in it afterwards, let me know and I'll be glad to work with you. Though, keep in mind, the lower I get it for, the lower I'll sell it for afterwards.
It was a little too pricy for my intent. By the time shipping became a factor, I'd have been in it for around $50.00 for one that I'd have a hard time re-selling and have little use for myself. Ah, well. So it goes.

Here's a couple of 8-track players for parts or repair. -
The top one, the Craig, looks like it might be another S681.
One Craig 8 track AM- FM car radio that is missing volume switch. Case is painted yellow and looks like it was used for parts. The other one is Audiovox AM-FM radio. Both radios are sold as is condition with no exterior plastic knob hardware.
If anyone would like me to do a no-cost inspection of any 8-track player that they buy, I'd be glad to, if they pay for the shipping expenses. It's win-win, as I disassemble and clean the player for them and get to learn more about the individual players.

That's an awesome offer, LV. ---
Here's a Craig 8-track brochure for sale. -
This is a vintage sales brochure from Craig featuring their line of 8-track & cassette car stereos, measures 8 1/2" x 11", full color, illustrated, quad-foldout (4 pages/8 sides), and is undated but vintage. The two scans show the front cover, and a sample interior page.
I only noticed it today so there's just 1 day and 11 hours to go. Looking for a starting bid of $2.99
