Was going to pull the oil pan off to see why I have no oil pressure ...... but the engines going out instead . Front bolts are hard to get to without lifting the motor + drop my steering linkage . Not much progress yet just starting to unbolt the lower stuff . Removed the oil pump first before doing any of this and it seems ok . Bought a new melling pump and a windage tray + gaskets at www.manciniracing.com so this project is now going to be a full blown rebuild . Only doing the lower end , since I had the heads done 3yrs ago . 6 pack pistons ? 9.5 / 1 ? Anyone know what the cam specs were for a 69 / 70 440 police pkg ? At the moment don't really have the funds or ambition to do this ~ but it has to be done . Also by myself kinda sucks too . I'll get some pics on the way of progression .

Good luck with this stuff, Mr. Mer. A job far beyond my capabilities, I wouldn't even know where to start. I read your post and I see "melling pump", and I'm like what the hell is a melling pump? lol so I see it's an oil pump made by Melling Engine Parts. They must have a good reputation if you're getting your parts shipped Michigan to Ontario from them - Did you get those cam specs? www.moparchat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97631

I've been told that this is similar to the original magnum cam www.summitracing.com/parts/dcc-4452783ae/overview/I'd still get some newer & lighter pistons, you have to get your rotating assembly balaced anyway with any new pistons(most likely that is) so that doesn't add costs much.

I went to Mancini racing . There only 40 min away from me . Found a guy around the corner from me that rebuilds engines . He used to build race motors for boats and just drag races now . Hes old school so this will be done right . Just have to pull it out and mess up my pretty floor .

Almost ready to be yanked . It looks naked without the cop dual snorkel, but a good start on motor building excitement!

Its out . Now for a trailer ride around the corner to access the damage . No sludge , and the dent in the oil pan wasn't affecting the pickup tube . Must of been the oil pump , even tho it looks to be in decent condition . Once the grime is off this motor I'll check it out to see if it was the original . Somewhere down the road it had mismatched heads on it , that I fixed a few yrs ago .

Update : Its the original motor made in aug/74 and never been tampered with , other than the one miss matched head . Timing chain was extremely worn and camshaft missing about 4 lobes . Little bit of a ridge in the cylinders and the crank has some scoring . Pickup tube was collapsed inside where the screen is and cracked . So far its getting bored 30 over and totally machined from top to bottom . Turning the crank , sizing the rods . My new heads are getting some attention also . Forged flat tops combined with my 452 heads (88cc) will make 9. 3/1 comp .

Any news on the block Chris?? Hows she coming along?? Now that I finally got me a big block, just gotta go one step above huh?? haha jk
I'm hoping to bring mine up north for a trip when shes done. We'll have to find some empty back roads and go for a run! Your killing me with the pistons though!! I've been contemplating getting some flat tops to up the comression, but $$$.......
What kind of cam you gonna go with??

I just checked it out yesterday . All the machining is done and the crank n pistons are in . Mopar wasn't to kind on the casting process . The rear of my block above the bellhousing looks like its full of flaking rust , but its the casting . Nothing to crazy but I thought it would of came off after the block was hot tanked . Builder said all big blocks he's dealt with have the same casting flaws . We were looking at a bunch of cam #'s but nothing too radical since no headers , stall , or gearing ~ plus being a land yacht doesn't help . Going with a comp towing / rv type cam . He crunched the #'s , so a little over 400hp is fine by me . Going with the stock color too , and maybe put on the stock valve covers and paint the intake to match .... maybe . Then if I'm not impressed , maybe a gear change .

Sounds like a solid plan man! I'm interested in seeing what cam you go with. I went with the comp XE256h... But am second guessing it now. See a lot of them in the 318s, but not many 440s. However, as you mentioned cant go real radical.. It is a towing cam however so we'll see.
Look forward to some pics, and seeing it come together!

Had the motor now since September , but haven't installed it yet . Bought some energy suspension motor mounts and should change the converter seal since its right there in the open . As for the cam , the spec card seems a bit confusing ~ sae dur 288 int 298 exh Power washed the engine compartment with some touch up paint , but thats about it . Still on the fence about painting the edelbrock intake blue and fixing/painting the stock valve covers . Or just clean it up and leave the chrome ones on . Water pump is aluminum too , so idk ... paint it ? If anything progresses , I'll be posting .
