I'm wondering if the steering column itself always came in black in 74. Many cars have a black steering wheel, so it would only be noticeable on a car with a non-black steering wheel. Here's 440Rulez's CHP: Notice the column is black, even though the wheel is tan. Do we have any evidence of any 74 Monacos, police or civilian, having a non-black steering column? I think that the police-style bluesmobile style horn pad always came in black (74-77) bluesmobiles.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=details&thread=170&post=768I think that the metal dash area in 74 was always black. bluesmobiles.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=details&action=display&thread=204I'm thinking that the years for the black-only metal dash area match the years for the black-only steering column - I'm pretty sure 74; maybe 75 too. My 76 parts car had a tan metal dash. And the steering column that I got from Nathan is tan (I believe that was from a 76 Monaco). The movie bluesmobile always seems to have a tan steering column, such as: The only scenes where the column is not obviously tan is in the scenes with the angle like this at the bridge to nowhere: Maybe that could be a black column; or maybe just bad lighting. The movie folks seemed to do a lot of work dying police horn pads tan. It looks like they also did work painting all the steering columns to tan? These guys were busy! your friend in other people working a lot, arthur

Here's a bluesmobile style non-tilt, non-telescoping column: and a 1974 tilt/telescoping with the wheel pulled out, showing as much column as possible: based on the distance from the ignition lock to the upper end of the steering column, I think this car: from here: bluesmobiles.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=sightings&thread=138&post=1812has a tilt/telescoping column. So that car totally fits the 1975 CHP Monaco story. It seems that it might be a good idea to start a thread: "things that were only black in 1974, but had other color options in later years", but for now, I'm going to say: steering column: 1974: black only 1975: could be non-black with a tilt/telescoping wheel 1976+ could be non-black with any type of wheel/column and maybe only 1975: could be non-black with a CHP tan tilt/telescoping wheel your friend in color tracking, arthur
