Only one Ecto-1 and one Ecto-1a were ever built and screen used for filming. Sony still owns the cars and have no intention of selling them any time soon. This Ecto-1 has had a "screen used" life in show business since the 1960’s, including a scene in 1967 movie “The Heat of the Night” featuring Sidney Poitier. After being retired from screen use, it was converted to an Ecto-1 and restored by a picture car company for exhibition use. We purchased this car and have displayed it in our museum for just over 10 years. The 59 Cadillac commercial vehicle is a rare car anyway you slice it. Only about 200 of these hearse / ambulances were ever built. There are only 8 known legit Ecto-1 replicas in America.

So why part with it? Because Volo soon will have something even better, Museum Director Brian Grams said. The original movie car is a Miller-Meteor, Grams said he has located one of these exceptionally rare bodies and is sparing no expense in fine-tuning a new Ecto-1 display.
“We purchased it and for the past year have been restoring it to make it not a close, but exact replica of the original,” he said. “The restoration is being done by the same people who recently restored the original car for Sony, so they have first-hand knowledge.”
