Does anyone on here know if police package (K code) cars with 440s had hood insulation pads? My Mendocino County '75 Gran Fury doesn't have one and shows no signs of having one in the past. If it's supposed to I'll buy a repro but if it never did I don't want to add one. Thanks, Adam

74 Marin County had it: and 74 ex-MHP fury had it: They were both 440's. 177 ellwood's 1975 civilian 440 w/ towing package didn't have it (or it was removed) I'll check the catalogs and see if I see anything.

I've bought a few ex cop cars and, while they weren't 1970's Chrysler products, none of them had their insulation left. A few were surplus direct from the departments.
I've heard that it's removed if a car is going to be idling for a period of time; police cars have a tendency to run hot, so it would make sense that they often intentionally remove the insulation to keep the cars running cooler.

Here's the info from the 74 parts catalog.
It lists the two pieces as "silencer, hood inner panel", 15-03-60, front, rear.
It just lists it for all monacos and furys, and doesn't show only for 440 or cop.
I can understand the rationale for calling it a silencer (keep the loud 440 cop motor sounds inside the engine compartment). What is the purpose of wanting it for an insulator? Keep the heat in the engine compartment to keep the hood paint from peeling?

You'd want to keep the outside of the hood cool so when you stopped those good looking speeders they could work off the ticket on the hood of your car!

If it's supposed to I'll buy a repro but if it never did I don't want to add one. Do the repro's have the sickening asbestos-like material of the original? Do you have a source for the repros? It seems like a niche market (74-77 c-bodys, that were cop cars, that had 440s).

Hmm. There's no pic. It has this text: > DOD-096 The Hood Insulation fits under the hood as original, die > cut to the original size and ready to install. > This pad is of the highest quality and a perfect fit. That text above sounds great. > Use automotive spray adhesive (not included) to glue to the > underside of the hood. The text above sounds horrible. The original was attached with clips. You can see the "fastener" part listed as quantity "AR : as required" in the parts catalog pic above. My guess is that it's not designed for an exact replacement (it probably doesn't have the fastener holes), and that it's probably not the correct material.

The fact that they mention 77 and 78 Monaco as the same part as the 74-75 and no Royal Monaco makes me a little curious too, this might be for a B-Body not a C-Body and they just have the years screwed up. I guess when I'm ready to take the chance I'll call them and see what they have to say.

58hemifury beat me to the question.
And...
How can it be "die cut to the original size and ready to install" and fit a '74 as well as a '78 ?

When I first found it I didn't even notice the year thing, when Arthur mentioned the spray glue I went back and read the listing and that's when it dawned on me.

here is a photo of what is claimed to be (DOD-096) from: carpartjim.com AKA (CollectorsAutoSupply.com) AKA (carpartjim on eBay) * I wonder if there is a place that sells this stuff by the yard and you can cut your own. .

I just noticed this on the carpartjim website...
"Made to order".
It sounds like buying a large roll, and then cutting different patterns from it, is exactly what they are doing.
