I posted this over at Blues Brothers Central, but it's been dead over there for a while so I though I'd see if anyone here can help me out. We already discussed that the record in the apartment that Elwood puts on is Louis Jordans Saturday Nite Fish Fry, even though the song playing is Let The Good Times Roll. Does anyone know what kind of record player Elwood has though?

I have been waiting to make a thread on this very subject, I just haven't finished getting my Elwood stereo finished. The one he has is a Sears portable stereo phonograph model # 171.29240500. It has BSR internals made in Great Britain. The other interesting thing besides the wrong record being played is that this model of record player isn't capable of playing 78 rpm records. The record is spinning at 45 rpms. So the volume must have been turned down as well. This model can only play 33rpm 12 inch and 45rpm 7 inch records, it has a left and right volume control and a tone control. There was a model made before the one Elwood has it is a Sears model 171.32550300 it has the same black outer case with speakers but the stereo part is white but it is capable of playing 78 rpm records. I have two of the Elwood style record players, one has a shattered case and is good for parts and one is complete just needs a good going through. I have one of the earlier versions that can play 78rpm records. I have been thinking of using the outer case of the earlier one and the correct parts of the extra later one and seeing if I could make a screen accurate one that can actually play a 78 rpm record. Sounds like a good winter project. The earlier version. Separate tone, volume and balance controls and the speed selection is at the front and the record size selection is at the side near the tone control. I've got 50 cents more than I'm going to keep, so let the good times roll......

I would definitely call that a match! Good find on the whole RPM inconsistency as well!

Does anyone have any extra screencaps of the record player handy? What I had was just pics off the television, not very good detail. - Here's a novelty Sears model # 171.29100500 for $40 pensacola.craigslist.org/clt/3447556343.html- If you buy it, you have to buy the car to go with it ...

Wow, a 4 speed! Maybe it's designed for paranoid lunatics and the fourth is reverse(for listening those hidden satanic messages of course).

The 4-th speed is 16 RPM; a very short-lived speed from the 60's that lacked the quality for high-fidelity recordings and was, subsequently discontinued.

I've never heard of 16(+2/3) lp's until now. And I've always preferred vinyl. Feel kind of embarrassed now, but I really thought that I've seen em all when I found out about "elcaset" few years ago.

Hi Legendary: Nice find! I did buy it now, and I'll keep it in the MMoA if you don't want it, but if you figure out within a week or so that you'd like it, I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it. I thought that would be a fair way to keep it from getting away, but still let you have it if you want. your friend in good deals, and good dealing, arthur

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I remember reading this and thinking about responding, but apparently never got around to it. Although I appreciate the offer, I feel this piece is better served in the MMOA than in my house collecting dust hoping one day I may find the time to tear it apart and try to make it work again. Glad to see I helped find another piece for the museum!
