Looking at some of the fuel doors that I have there is a difference between 1974 and 1975-7. The 1974 doors only have one bolt attach point on each hinge where as the other years have two attach bolts per hinge. The 74 door also has larger bumpers at the bottom edges and no lightning holes. 1974. 1975-7 Larger bumper. 1974 1975-7 smaller bumper 1974 on top. 1975-7 bottom 1974 single attach point on each side.

Hi Blusmbl: Nice find! If I understand correctly, you're saying that not only are fuel access doors different between 74 and 75-77, that also the cars are different also. A 74 has one bolt per side coming out, like this: whereas a 75-77 has two bolts per side coming out. The following is a pic of 177ellwood's 75. Do my markups correctly describe the differences in the years: What can you gather from this screen shot? Is there anything there that you could pick 74 over 75-77 (or vice versa)? It looks to me that the bracket on the right has been pushed back (the bolt coming out of the car is not parallel with the longitudinal axis of the car). That doesn't seem 74 or 75-77 specific; it's just an indication that I can't really tell what's going on in the pic. thanks, arthur

I can't see anything that would indicate that the fuel door wasn't a 74 in the picture. I put the movie on to see it in real time and couldn't see anything either. But what is strange is what looks like the reflection of a face in the lower left part of the bumper just below the pump handle. Once you see it you can't unsee it, could be the camera man. Also to the right of it looks like a white shirt and black tie but no head, spooky, but I think it's a close up of the hand holding the camera.
The fuel doors will all interchange as well as the hinges. There are two studs sticking out the back on all cars, and 75-77 also take two bolts on the inside of the hinges. To use 74 hinges on a 75-77 car you would just have to drill an elongated hole to accommodate the bolts. I think after a while the hinges would loosen up and the door would be difficult to operate so they added extra security. The lightning holes could be there to help air circulate through it to dry it out, but it's just a hunch.

I don't either. I would go so far that I believe the picture shows that the door must have been a 74 door (because the far right area of the door doesn't have a lightening hole in it).

Ahhh, you're right!
> Also to the right of it looks like a white shirt and black tie but no head, > spooky, but I think it's a close up of the hand holding the camera. I don't see the shirt/tie, but it could be because I'm so scared of Michael Meyers in the reflection of the bumper.

Got it, studs, bolts:
That pic above shows the Schrader valve for 177ellwood's air-shocks. I see in your pics above that you have a valve in the left hole, and the right hole empty. Do you have air-shocks? Was your valve in that position (left hole vs. right hole) from the factory?
> To use 74 hinges on a 75-77 car you would just have to drill an > elongated hole to accommodate the bolts. Or, if I understand correctly, just not use the bolts, and one would have a setup that matched what was done in 1974 (2 studs, no bolts).
As for my puzzlement over the bracket "bend" in the screen shot, I now see in earlier pics that the "bend" is a normal part of the bracket, and doesn't indicate anything unusual in the screen shot.
thanks, arthur

It took me a little while, but I discovered that the "headless shirt/ tie combo" is just to the right of the "face". It's covered up by the green circle in your photo.

If you add in the Brougham fuel door; then it's a completely different level of complicated. Though, didn't they move the back-up lights out of the fuel door and into the tail-lights in '75? If so, it may explain the redesign.

I thought that the central area with the crest lit up on the '75 when the car was in reverse. I could be mistaken, though.

When you wrote: > ...didn't they move the back-up lights out of the fuel door and into the > tail-lights in '75? I was just trying to say that I didn't think that it was moved out of the fuel door. I don't know if it was additionally added to the tail lights. But my source for not thinking it was removed from the fuel access door is just that it seemed that Broughams always had the same door. Here's a 77 brougham from www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/forum/topic/9108-sold-usa-1976-royal-monaco-georgia/#entry110832But even if the fuel access door is the same for a 74-77 Brougham, maybe they removed the light bulbs from it and moved the behavior solely to the taillight in 1975+.

I can say with 100% certainty that the fuel door on that car is different from the one on my '74 Brougham. The one pictured above says "Royal Monaco" whereas, mine says "DODGE" in the fuel door/backup lights. So, at the very least they changed the fuel doors sometime after 1974.

So, at the very least they changed the fuel doors [on Broughams] sometime after 1974. Yes, after looking at the parts catalogs, I think that pic of the 77 is a standard 75-77 royal fuel access door (without integrated backup lights), and I was confused by the reflection in the picture and thought it was similar in concept to a 74 brougham fuel access door. I get 3 styles of fuel access doors for 74-77 non-station-wagon c-body monacos: Style 1) The blumo D.O.D.G.E 3756395 74 non-brougham 3792295 75 non-royal, non-royal brougham These two appear the same, with the differences pointed out by blusmbl Style 2) 74 brougham unique [with integrated backup lights] 3756431 74 brougham Style 3) same door for all royal / royal brougham 75-77 [D O D G E replaced by single Royal Monaco insignia, and backup lights removed] 3792570 75-77 royal / royal brougham It was hard to find the parts catalog, because the only pictures of the parts category were of the station wagon (where the fuel access door is on the quarter panel). 74 follows: 75 follows: 76 follows: 77 follows: some of the clues that led me to it: your friend in enumerating the possibilities, arthur
